Interstitial laser therapy (ILT) is a microinvasive technique that uses image-guided needle probes to deliver laser energy into a tumor to slowly heat and destroy the tumor cells. It is concluded that a diffuser tip, such as the sapphire probe, may be preferable to the bare fibre for interstitial laser thermotherapy because it gives a smaller temperature gradient and helps to avoid carbonization which results in preserved light penetration and improved temperature control. The main objective of this project is to use Laser Interstitial ThermoTherapy to induce coagulative necrosis and tumor shrinkage. We are modeling the heat transfer from a Nd:YAG laser to a liver tumor and the surrounding healthy tissue.

One such method is laser-induced interstitial thermal therapy (LITT), also called laser-induced thermotherapy.

Laser interstitial thermotherapy (LITT) is a minimally-invasive local laser thermal treatment that has been used clinically to treat tumours and other diseases in organs such as the liver, brain, prostate and breast (Masters and Bown 1992, Schroder et al 1994, Steger et al 1989, Bown 1983).

Immunostimulating Interstitial Laser Thermotherapy (imILT) is a specific form of thermotherapy, which, in addition to destroying tumor tissue, has been optimized to cause a tumor specific immunologic response. Interstitial laser thermotherapy was used to treat rat liver tumours.
